Dietary Suggestions for Endometriosis
Dietary Recommendations
for Endometriosis
Sadly, endometriosis affects around 1 in 10 women across the world and it can make life a real struggle. There is no known cause and there is no known cure, but there are some simple dietary changes that sufferers can make to help alleviate symptoms.
An increase in Omega-3 fats are highly recommended. These are healthy fats that can help fight the inflammation and period cramps often associated with endometriosis. Be careful not to confuse omega-3 fats with omega-6 fats, as omega-6 fats can have the opposite effect to omega-3 and potentially worsen symptoms. Omega-6 fats are largely found in processed foods and plant oils like corn, cottonseed, and peanut oil.
It is well known that eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains are important for any diet, however, they can give extra benefits for women with endometriosis. These food groups are high in fibre and a high fibre diet can actually help to lower estrogen levels. Estrogen is the hormone responsible for causing the lining of the uterus to thicken, so, by lowering estrogen levels, symptoms of endometriosis may be lessened. In addition to this, it is recommended that red meat intake is cut down as there is evidence that suggests red meat increases estrogen levels. Processed foods also usually contain little fibre and should also be avoided.
Endometriosis can often cause heavy bleeding resulting in iron loss. For this reason, it is important to include foods high in iron such as beetroot and dried apricots. If you go for an iron supplement, make sure you choose one that does not cause constipation. Liquid iron supplements are often a better option, as is the plant-based iron source spirulina.
Endometriosis doesn’t have to make you feel completely out of control. A few simple food and dietary changes could make all the difference and have you on your way to a healthier life.
